Artificial Pancreas Shows Promise in Type I Diabetes Treatment

In a small research study, a closed-loop diabetes management system coined the 'artificial pancreas' appears to be more effective than traditional insulin pumps in maintaining optimal blood sugar levels in Type I diabetics.  The 'artificial pancreas' pump system continuously monitors blood sugar and only deploys insulin as needed, withholding insulin when it is not needed.  The study also looked at the effects of alcohol causing hypoglycemia in Type I diabetics, with the 'artificial pancreas' showing promise over existing insulin pumps.  More studies are planned with the new technology by researchers.
