A genetic study of fruit flies reveals some genetic secrets of fad diets, a possible explanation of why they work for some and not others. 146 different genetic lines of fruit flies were given four different types of diets: nutritionally balanced, low calorie, high sugar, and high fat. Various metabolic traits were measured across the genetic lines and the results showed that some were affected more by certain diets than others. However, genetics and genotype interactions proved to have the greater effect. Translation: genetics matter more than diet. This indicates that some people have an easy time losing weight by adjusting their diet, while for others diet makes little difference.
